REFEREE PRE-MATCH BRIEFING
Players, this is your official pre-match briefing!
YOU WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR:
1. Reading and understanding all the rules as stated in the OFFICIAL USA PICKLEBALL RULEBOOK
2. Confirming that the paddle you are using for match play is listed as “PASS” on the USA Pickleball Approved Paddle List. If the violation is identified after the match has started, the player or team forfeits the match. (Rule. 2.F.1., et.al.).
Confirm your paddle is approved for play using the web link below or the QR code to the right: https://equipment.usapickleball.org/paddle-list/
The pre-match instructions are outlined below, and it is your responsibility to review, read, and understand them:
1. Wait for the referee to completely call the score before you serve. A Fault will be called. (Rule 4.M.9.) It is a fault to serve before the complete score is called.
2. Players call the center line on serves. Referee will call NVZ line faults, short serves, and service faults.
3. Players make all line calls loud and clear. Players can appeal to referee on line calls. Referees will not call lines unless asked. Exceptions will be matches that have line judges.
4. The referee will ensure players are in the correct position before calling the score. There is no fault for players being in the wrong position. This includes wrong server or receiver. (Rule 4.B.9., etc.)
5. Once the score has been called, the receiver cannot become “not ready” unless there is a valid hinder.
6. A player may appeal to the referee to make the call if he or she did not clearly see the ball land. If the referee is unable to make the call, the ball is “in.”
7. Each team gets Two 1-minute timeouts per-game. Referee will announce, “15 seconds.”, and players must then get into position by the end of the 1-minute time out. Referee will call, “Time in.”, and announce the score if the players are ready or should be ready. (Rule 10.A.5.)
8. All games are win-by-two.
9. Remember the Code of Ethics for Line-Calling. Questionable line calls must be resolved in favor of the opponent.
10. Excessive profanity for any reason will result in a technical warning or foul. The referee will determine the severity of any violation. (Rule 13.G.1.b.)
REFEREE ON COURT MATCH BRIEFING
Referee will do introductions, verify players’ names, ensure that starting first-servers are wearing official identification, check paddles, inform players of type of match (2 out of 3 to 11 win by 2, 1 to 15 win by 2, etc.). Ask one of the players to select a 1 or 2; winner selects Serve, End, Receive, or Defer. Referee will then ask if there are any questions and use the remaining time for players to warm up before starting the match on time.
